All of Octobers’ Books – the Good, and the Not-so-Good

We’re up to 114 books so far now in October! I made it through far fewer books for a few major reasons this month. One – I’ve been crocheting a ton to prep for a market in December and a new permanent vendor stall in a store. Two – Hell Bent ALONE took me two weeks to read. I can’t even tell you the last time I took that long to read a book. Generally, I am a pretty quick reader and I read for at least an hour a day. I wanted to love to but…keep reading to find out if I did!

Hell Bent – Leigh Bardugo

I don’t think I liked this one! Newly appointed Virgil, Alex and Occulus (Dawes) spend this story trying to bail Darlington out of hell, where he’s managed to get himself imprisoned. While I liked the story itself, there was a lot of history and background of the rituals that I felt I had to trudge through to get to the plot, which took me out of the moment. I get that it’s fantasy but it didn’t add to the story for me. It felt dull and like wading through a textbook. Check out my review of the previous book in my September Book Review. This book also took me nearly 2 weeks to finish, by far a record for the year.

The Senator’s Wife – Liv Constantine

I looooved this one. It was so entertaining! Every time I kept thinking I had it figured out, I didn’t and I loved the plot twists. D.C. Philanthropist Sloane deals with Lupus while juggling her many responsibilities in the political sphere, being married first to a senator, who is killed in a horrible accident, and later going on to marry his best friend, who supported her throughout her grief. Successful, kind and well-connected, everyone seems to like Sloane and her new husband Whit, who also has everything going for him, albeit, less on the straight and narrow. When Sloane needs a major surgery due to the effects of her condition, they hire Athena, a combo home health aide and administrative assistant to help Sloane out during her recovery. Is help all Athena going to offer Sloane and Whit?
