Is your yarn hidden away? Try Pegboard Yarn Storage!

Figuring out how to store your yarn may be one of the trickiest parts of being a fiber crafter. Stick it in drawers? In a closet? Boxes and bags? Wherever your yarn storage ends up, its out of sight and out of mind and suddenly you forget you own tons of yarn. This just won’t do. Keep reading to try a different method.

The Inspiration

I am a committed Pinterester and found ideas similar to what I ended up doing on Pinterest. My biggest inspiration was Knits for Life’s pegboard, I saw it and I knew I had to have it.

The Supplies

Making your own Yarn Pegboard is pretty simple. You only need a few supplies and a wall to fit your pegboards. I’ve linked what I used below! (I am not affiliated with these links)

  • Pegboards (I bought 2)
  • Wall Screws (you need 1 per corner ideally)
  • Spacers (These are important so your pegs don’t punch holes in your walls)
  • Pegs (I like these because they’re super sturdy. I needed 2 packs!)

The How

I hung my 2×4 Pegboards one on top of each other. I actually lost a screw during our move into our new house so I overlapped my pegboards by an inch. This worked surprisingly well! A drill and a buddy is a huge help in this. I did one screw and spacer in each corner. The order was wall – spacer – peg board – screw.

Once the pegboards were hung, the fun part begins. Its time to cake your yarn and start hanging!

It probably took me about 20 hours on and off to cake 10 years worth of a yarn collection. Mostly I caked yarn while I watched netflix, and I made sure to wrap the labels I had and stick them into the cakes so I knew what the yarn was when I used it later on.

Before I started hanging, I also came up with a vague plan for my yarn organization. I didn’t want it all thrown up there willy-nilly and I also didn’t want it so strict it was hard to maintain. My plan is below. I also chose not to group the same cakes of yarn together, but you totally could. Its your pegboard to do what you wish!
